How to build GNU/Linux for an embedded x86 computer
Recently, I had a customer who needed an embedded Linux distribution running on an Advantech PCM-9371 single board computer (SBC). The PCM-9371 contains a low voltage Celeron or Pentium III processor. This article describes why the Openembedded build system was chosen and a few tips for running Openembedded on a x86 system.

Adding packages to OpenEmbedded bootstrap-image images
When using OpenEmbedded to build a Linux distribution for a new machine, there is often a need to add a few packages to images created. In this article, we look at how OpenEmbedded generates images, how to add packages to a standard image.

Remote access for embedded systems behind a firewall

When deploying embedded systems, wouldn't it be nice if you could easily set up remote access for troubleshooting and updates? With Embedded Linux systems, this is quite easy to do. This article will explore how to use SSH to set up remote access to an embedded system behind a firewall without using VPN or special network setup and presents a few tips for making this setup work well.

Openembedded Build for PXA255 IDP updated

I just pushed changes into the main Openembedded dev repository to fix kernel and u-boot builds for the PXA255 IDP platform (designed by Accelent, now owned by BSquare). Unfortunately, I don't have access to hardware, so if anyone has hardware and can test, please do so.

  • kernel updated to 2.6.19
  • u-boot updated to 1.1.6

New Phone Number

BEC Systems now has a local phone number:

1-234-542-3261

Previously, we had just used a 800 number and a backup phone number routed through one of our associate companies, but decided to add a dedicated local phone number for the following reasons:

  • 800 numbers are not callable outside the US.
  • There have been some issues with several people not being able to call the 800 number. Who knows where the issue is, but it is not worth dealing with.
  • As we can route the new number through our VoIP service, it only took about 10 minutes to set up, so why not.

The existing Toll Free number will continue to work as before, so feel free to use it as well.
